Back in Adam Smith’s Days (Wealth of Nations was published in 1776) the market economy was working effectively on the Main Streets of towns and villages and was creating community. Merchants and agriculture were generating an economy that work for the good of people. It worked because we knew the craftsman, doctor, lawyer, shop owner, and newspaper publisher, and therefore, you and I could personally communicate with neighbors, who lived next door or down the street and make personally experienced decisions about product and character.
